The final race in the Leicester 5k summer series was provided the backdrop of a miserable, cold, rainy evening in Victoria Park. However, far from being a pathetic fallacy, it saw a strong field put in some very good performances. The first Strider to master the long course (3.17 miles) was, unsurprisingly, Jason Barton who stayed with the eventual winner all the way round the first 3 miles before a gap of 7 seconds began to open up. Jay finished second overall with a time of 17.08, a good 31 seconds ahead of the next placed runner.
Next back in was Shane Sharkey, wrestling his way back to the form of last summer after a relatively mediocre start to the year, with a PB equalling time of 20.24. Stuart Gergory completed the set in 28.41.
As this was the final race in the series, the overall leaderboard was revealed along with the presentations. For this is was all a bit of history repeating itself as Jay was declared second place overall, just behind Beaumont’s Steve Gibson. These are a very enjoyable series of races for a short sharp blast on a weekday evening. The winter series will commence again in November. [Shane]
