26 Jun 2016 – Prestwold 10k

10 Stilton Striders went to the Prestwold 10K on a cloudy Sunday morning.

Jason Barton was in fine form as always and was the first strider back in a time of (35:30) in 8th place, next back was Matt Gayton in a time of (38:21) who managed to hold off Luke Eggleston who got round in (38:39). Stuart Shaw (38:39) and Darren Glover (39:41) both managed to get under 40 minutes which later meant Stilton Stirders mens team had won the Men’s team prize!

Mark Stoneley was next back in (40:31) John Houghton was a few minutes later who posted a time of (46:37), David Hall ran a PB in his Striders debut (49.48), Helen Plant crossed the line in (51:47) and Lynda Harris was still running very strong crossed the finish line in (52:30) completed the Stilton Striders team. 17 Jun 2016 – Grantham Summer Solstice 10k

There were just a couple of Striders who headed along to the Grantham Summer Solstice 10k race held last Friday evening. The start was from Long Bennington and the course was all on road – a few hilly parts but predominately flat. Lots of positives for this race – lots of support throughout from locals & marshals (we heard lots of shouts out for the Stilton Striders which was great), chipped timing, really fast results which were on display and texted straight to your phone…..and most importantly a bottle of beer at the end within a fairly decent goodie bag. Results were Brian Walkling 48.32 (very impressive after a bike ride to the race) and Sarah Procter 48.35.  [Sarah]

14 Jun 2016 – Rothley 10k

5 Striders made the short journey to Rothley for this years 10K. Luke Eggleston was first back with a fantastic new PB time of 40:01 (21st place). Next back was Dan Valencia in a time of 45:38 (113th place). Only 2 minutes later John Houghton crossed the finish line in 47:14 looking in fine form (147th place). Dan Howley was still running strong stopping the clock at 49:00 in (187th place). Louise Houghton was also running strong crossing the finish line in 50:07 in (211th place). [Luke]

8 May 2016 – Clawson 10k

A perfect day for spectating at this year’s Clawson 10k, with sunshine and warm temperatures a shock to the system for the runners.  158 started this hilly 10k – the climbs and descents giving it the feel of a fell race.  The route would be familiar to anyone who has joined one of our head torch runs from Long Clawson over the last couple of years – although it is definitely a different test in the sunshine as opposed to the dark, wind and rain!

There was a bumper turn out of Stilton Striders for this local favourite, with Katie Hateley taking home a chunk of Stilton as 3rd lady and four other top 10 finishes (some aided by a number of other runners going off course).
Luke Eggleston (4th, 46.53), Darren Glover (5th, 47.03), Rob Beers (6th, 49.30), Rich Gray (8th, 49.46), Michael Atton (14th, 51.14), Katie Hateley (3rd lady, 22nd overall, 52.49), Dan Valencia (23rd, 53.14), John Houghton (33rd, 56.29), Dan Howley (44th, 58.40), Louise Houghton (46th, 61.17), Sarah Procter (50th, 62.56) and Lynda Harris (57th, 65.02).  Nicholas Smith, Celina Silver and their dog (all representing Stamford Striders) were 116th in 80.41.  Di’s junior Striders training sessions are also clearly paying off with Finn Mulholland first junior in 68.37 and Archie Parrott in 76.50.

24 Apr 2016 – Orston Spring Dash

A well run 10k for a tenner – proceeds were going towards Orston school which is where the race began and finished. The majority of the run was mainly along the quiet country roads in and around Orston (the route went from Orston to Flawborough, Thoroton and to Orston) with a small part being run along a track. Good value for money …….with a slightly longer than expected 10k (ended up being about 6.5 miles) and a piece of cake at the end. My time was 52mins 43. [Sarah]

LRRL winter league – 17 Jan Markfield 10k [CANCELLED]

[UPDATE 17TH JANUARY – RACE CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW AND ICE]

This coming Sunday (17th January) sees the first race of this year’s LRRL winter league – the Markfield 10k.  Attached below are important details for all runners from the organising club, so please take a look if you are planning to race.  Winter league races are just £5 per race – but restricted to members of affiliated clubs, such as ours.

In particular, car sharing is crucial to being able to keep league races open to all members of affiliated clubs.  Race entry limits have increased to 700 for this one, and to make this possible, all runners parking at the venue need to car share – 3 runners per car.  Please see details on the advisory notice below.

More background on the LRRL in general can be found here (LRRL page).

28 Nov 2015 – Chase Water 10km

Stuart Gregory was the only Stilton Strider to make his way to Chase Water for the annual 10km trail race and lined up with 304 other runners on a breezy, cool and cloudy day.  With a relatively high number of runners on trails that were less than favourable towards overtaking Stuart found it hard to find a way through and as the possibility of a personal best sailed away into the sunset Stuart decided to put all of his efforts into the second half of the race and with clearer trails his times began to respond as Stuart crossed the finish line in 1hr 5m. [Stuart]

21/22 Nov 2015 – Dirty Dash & Mo Run

Stuart Gregory was the only Stilton Strider to take part in the final race of the Midland 10km trail run series at the National Watersports Centre and joined 189 other runners on the start line on what was a very cold day with a biting wind chill making it feel more like -3c. The first half of the race followed a series of foot paths and trails around the outside of the main boating and multi events lake before heading out into the main parkland, at this point Stuart was holding on to what remained of the main field which had been blown to bits in the first few KM’s. As Stuart headed out into the parkland around the centre he began to make ground on a number of runners including some familiar faces from other races and after a number of short sharp inclines Stuart hit the final incline to finish out on his own and rounded off a steady run with a sprint finish to complete the 10km course in 1hr 4m 59s.

Stuart Gregory was also the only Stilton Strider to make his way to Nottingham for the annual 5km Mo Run, having placed highly in last years event and with his form slowly picking up towards the end of the year Stuart was hoping for a similar performance this time around and after making a good start to the race, his pace settled into the 10 minute per mile range where it remained for the rest of the race as Stuart completed a nice steady run in 31m 17s.  [Stuart]

11 Oct 2015 – Eaton Stampede

The fifth running of this event held in the scenic village of Eaton , sadly having set in the stone the date of this year’s race only to have other major local races along the way want to use the same date, Grrrrrr! However Chief promoter Tony Allen with a subtle mix of good marketing and implied threats managed to get a great turnout on a perfect morning weather-wise for the race. Naturally on `home soil` Stilton Striders were out in force but also shirts from Stamford Striders and Barrow Runners were part of this year’s start line.

The winner led from the off, a young lad who won the event two years ago could even afford to go wrong in his victory, he was positively flying!

It was up to the rest of us, the downhill start to the race is good however that none of us took our warm up serious enough as quite a few puffing and panting over the first churned up field. Last time I did the event it was a two lap affair and I have to say the single lap format made it much better for me, congratulations to the course developer as it had something of everything-certainly trails, hills and splashes of mud, rope climb, woods, fast descents, stiles, ladder climb and a splattering of road.

Much of the first 5K I sat in 5th place before getting up to 2nd place between 5 and 8.5k only to lose it in the last 1.5K and coming 4th, however was very pleased overall with my performance. Had a great racing tussle throughout with the guy who finished 2nd and fellow Striders Mike Bryan and a very strong Michael Atton.

Real credit to the organisers and the village of Eaton, lots of friendly marshals and helpers, the cakes were indeed way up to standard afterwards, any chance of opening the Pub in Eaton next year if just for the day?

I may sound like a stuck record on this but `support your local races`! These local events are often put on by a small amount of people and when they are gone they are gone and you`ll just be left with big bucks entry corporate events, get out and support them! Thanks to Tony and his team, excellent day! [Rob]
