Final summer outrun (9th Sep)

This Wednesday at 7pm is the final summer outrun of the season.  We’ll be running a relatively short 5 mile course in order to ensure we can safely complete the distance as a group before the light fails us.  The Crown in Old Dalby will then be our venue for our annual cake night!  As is traditional with our outrun programme, we will be collecting donations on the night to raise a few pounds for the Air Ambulance whilst replenishing the calories we’ve just burned off.

See you all there!

From September 16th our Wednesday evening runs will be back in town – see the diary dates page and the Autumn/Winter page for more details.

26 Aug 2015 – Three club challenge

This year’s event was hosted by the Striders, with a course specially designed and hosted by the Houghton clan at The Grange garden centre.  After traffic problems caused a delayed start, the 95 runners set off into the last rays of summer evening sunshine on a warm, if a little wet underfoot, evening.

Jason Barton set the early pace, leading the field of 40 Stilton Striders, 30 Wreake Runners and 25 Barrow Runners across the early muddy sections and into the wheat fields.  Whilst broadly flat along the River Wreake, the course made its way up three hills – christened “Barrow Bump”, “Wreake Rise” and “Strider Mountain” for the evening – as it headed out to Kirby Bellars and then back towards The Grange.

With Tim Hartley from Barrow coming through to finish the 4.6 mile course quickest, the team challenge was to see which club would get their first 25 runners back with the lowest cumulative position.

Final positions were calculated over a fantastic Tartiflette (and a drink or two), and for the first time since 2009, Stilton came out on top by a slim 8 places overall.

A huge thank you must go to John, Louise and all at The Grange who did us proud, all our enthusiastic marshals and everyone else who contributed – designing, clearing and marking the course, volunteering on the night and, of course, all the runners.  It was a great night, with a really positive atmosphere – roll on 2016!

Club run Weds 12th August

This Wednesday, 12th August, our outrun season continues with a run from the Anchor in Plungar.  As in prior years, due to the road past the pub being used by farm vehicles, please can runners take care in parking – specifically not parking on the road outside the pub.  Either park on Church Lane or Post Office Lane (just past the pub) or, if needed, double park with other runners’ cars in the pub car park.

See you all there!

Summer outrun update

We’re running from the Wheel Inn at Branston this Wednesday (24th June) – usual summer outrun arrangements, running at 7pm for around an hour with most people likely staying for a drink afterwards.  We’ll have a couple of routes on offer – a loop of 6 miles and options to make it between 4 and 5 miles for those after a more relaxed run.

No outrun the following week, as it is the Hungarton 7 league race (entries on-line via the Wreake website).

Full list of runs for the rest of the summer can be found via the summer outrun page, or regularly updated on the diary dates.

20 May 2015 – No Watch Race

Wednesday 20th May saw the return of one of the Strider’s traditional summer runs, the “No Watch Race”.  With only the attached instructions to go by, the 23 runners lined up in Hickling on a bright spring evening and gave in their estimated times – with estimates ranging from 35 mins to 51.13, it was clear that some were planning  to put in real effort on the “in the region of 5 miles” course (actually 5.2 miles).

Now, the goal of the race is to finish as close to your time estimate as possible – for many runners this means trying not to get caught up in ‘racing’ against the rest of the group.  With that in mind, you would expect to see a range of finish times, some quicker than estimated, some slower, right?

Wrong.  22 of the 23 runners were quicker than predicted, often by a minute or two per mile!  Either we are a pessimistic bunch, or just better runners than we give ourselves credit for – you decide….

With a few new/soon to be members, and a couple of people returning from injury, it was great to see people get into the spirit of running ‘naked’ (i.e. without a watch or GPS).  We even had an epic sprint finish between Tam and John – although between them they were over 15 minutes quicker than predicted, so maybe that wasn’t ideal (although great to watch!).

The overall winner (and only person coming in slower than their predicted time) – only 17 seconds out – was Michael Atton.  Maybe the key to good pacing is running 4 days after your debut marathon?
