Christmas dinner and presentation evening – Thurs 8th Dec

With over 70 Striders attending on Thursday it should be a great night.  Just to confirm details for those that are booked in, we are aiming to eat at 8pm, feel free to arrive for a drink from 7pm onwards.  The awards will be after the meal and feel free to bring along a raffle prize.

Venue is the Alpine Restaurant at The Grange, Asfordby Hill, LE14 3QU

Action required – Xmas dinner and annual awards

Ahead of this years dinner and awards, there are a few bits of information that we need from members in the next couple of weeks:

Xmas dinner – reserve your place(s) and pay your £15 per person by Weds 23rd November at the latest.  It all takes place on Thursday 8th December at the Alpine Restaurant at The Grange – drinks from 7pm, meal at 8pm followed by awards.  No need to pre-order food, but menu is attached at this link (and if you have any other dietary requirements, just let us know).

Club person of the year award – one of the main annual awards is based solely on a vote of the members, and the award is intended to reward someone who has given something extra to the club over the last 12 months.  So please have a think about who deserves a special ‘thank you’ and email us your vote.

London Marathon place – we have qualified for 2 places for the 2017 race.  As in previous years, we would like anyone who entered the ballot, was unsuccessful, and would still like to run the race to let us know.  Please don’t be shy – we can’t award you a place if we don’t know you want it!

Club standards – why not join the growing band of Striders who have already claimed their standard for this year?  Just email us your 3 qualifying times at different distances and we’ll do the rest!  All details at the club standards page.

Xmas dinner, awards, marathon, etc

Quick reminder – as requested in the recent Newsletter, in order to prepare for this year’s Christmas Dinner and Presentation Evening on Friday 4th December, please can members contact us by Sunday 22nd November to:

  • let us know if you would like to claim a ‘club standard’ for the year;

2015 Stilton Striders Christmas Dinner

Run England Group Leader of the Year!

If you’ve had reason to be anywhere near the council offices on Parkside around 6.30pm on a Monday over the last couple of years, you may well have wondered what is going on to attract so many people.  In fact, this is the meeting point for one of the most successful beginners running groups in the country.

Sponsored by Run England, organised and led by Rob Beers, and supported by many individuals from Stilton Striders (Ian, Simon, Jon and Jay all deserve a mention) these sessions are free for all, no commitment necessary and provide the warmest of welcomes to everyone regardless of prior running experience.

With a record attendance at the start of January this year (85 brand new runners signed up in one evening), the group has continued to go from strength to strength.  With regular 10 week ‘Couch to 5k’ coached courses (the next one starts in January), and a friendly group of like minded runners to keep everyone motivated all year round, this has proved a winning formula.  Many of the runners have gone on to compete in races over roads and trails, and covering all distances from 5k up to the marathon, and ever a 50k ultra marathon!

Rob himself can usually be found dishing out encouragement, advice and gently cajoling people to help reach their goals – even running with people in their debut races to help them along.  It was therefore no surprise to many to hear that he was nominated as “Run England Group Leader of the Year” at the recent England Athletics regional awards for the East Midlands.  Whilst unable to attend the awards ceremony where he was named the winner, he couldn’t get away that easily as everyone knew where he would be on a Monday evening…  The trophy was duly awarded to him this Monday by Dave Lodwick (EA Regional Council member) and Kim Angell (Leicestershire Beginner Running Activator) in front of his usual group of runners!  Congratulations, Rob.
