Summer outrun update

We’re running from the Wheel Inn at Branston this Wednesday (24th June) – usual summer outrun arrangements, running at 7pm for around an hour with most people likely staying for a drink afterwards.  We’ll have a couple of routes on offer – a loop of 6 miles and options to make it between 4 and 5 miles for those after a more relaxed run.

No outrun the following week, as it is the Hungarton 7 league race (entries on-line via the Wreake website).

Full list of runs for the rest of the summer can be found via the summer outrun page, or regularly updated on the diary dates.

17 June 2015 – Club Handicap Race

Thank you to everyone who came along to make this year’s race a great evening.  18 runners lined up for this year’s event (it seemed like more until Rutland Runners headed off to run their loop of the same course around the peninsula!).

With predicted times based on a mixture of recent race times and parkrun Melton PBs, this race really rewards those who put in that extra effort on the night.  There is a staggered start such that if everyone runs precisely in line with Mr Chairman’s expectations, they would all finish together.  With a 24 min 30 sec gap between first and final starter, it was then a waiting game to see who will turn the corner first into the (deceptively long) finishing straight to claim this year’s trophy.

After battling the surprisingly steep hills of the first 3 miles, the course flattens out – on this occasion, just as the runners turned into the wind, which rapidly was added to with a short sharp rain shower.

First to turn the corner and head for home (with applause from the crowd of Rutland Runners who had made it back – thanks guys!) was Debbie Wilson, rapidly followed a few seconds later by Nicholas Smith.  Jon Wilson finished in third (I can see a family trip to Melton Sports at the weekend to spend those vouchers!).

We then had 5 runners all within 15 seconds of their predicted time – Steph, Andy, Mike Bryan, Jay and Jenny.  A special mention must go to the epic sprint between Jenny and Jay, who had started nearly 25 minutes apart but pushed each other to finish pretty much bang on their time.

Tam and John were next home, after starting together, and it was Tam who took the honours (reversing the Rothley 10k result from the night before), followed by Mike Brighty, Simon, Shane, Iain, Celina, Clive, Isaac and Stuart.

Full results are below, and check out the gallery here for photos of the evening.

20 May 2015 – No Watch Race

Wednesday 20th May saw the return of one of the Strider’s traditional summer runs, the “No Watch Race”.  With only the attached instructions to go by, the 23 runners lined up in Hickling on a bright spring evening and gave in their estimated times – with estimates ranging from 35 mins to 51.13, it was clear that some were planning  to put in real effort on the “in the region of 5 miles” course (actually 5.2 miles).

Now, the goal of the race is to finish as close to your time estimate as possible – for many runners this means trying not to get caught up in ‘racing’ against the rest of the group.  With that in mind, you would expect to see a range of finish times, some quicker than estimated, some slower, right?

Wrong.  22 of the 23 runners were quicker than predicted, often by a minute or two per mile!  Either we are a pessimistic bunch, or just better runners than we give ourselves credit for – you decide….

With a few new/soon to be members, and a couple of people returning from injury, it was great to see people get into the spirit of running ‘naked’ (i.e. without a watch or GPS).  We even had an epic sprint finish between Tam and John – although between them they were over 15 minutes quicker than predicted, so maybe that wasn’t ideal (although great to watch!).

The overall winner (and only person coming in slower than their predicted time) – only 17 seconds out – was Michael Atton.  Maybe the key to good pacing is running 4 days after your debut marathon?

Juniors update – March 2015

There will be a break from junior training over Easter, with no training on 31st March, 2nd April, 4th April or 7th April.  Once training starts up again, after the clocks have changed, the venues will move for the summer.

From 9th April, Thursday sessions will be moving back to the country park, meeting at 6pm at the visitor centre.

From 14th April, Tuesday sessions will move back to KE7, meeting at 6.15pm.

These sessions will all be outdoors with no charge and they will be on in all weathers.

Details of this summer’s open meetings at Loughborough, and EA fees for the older juniors have been emailed to the juniors mailing list.

Curry run – 28th Jan

In addition to our usual club runs (see diary dates page for all details), our next head torch outrun is a special one.  At the slightly earlier time of 6.30pm on Weds 28th January, we’ll be running from Cafe Mash at Burton on the Wolds (around 5 miles, not too muddy, but you will need a head torch).  If you would like to join us to run and eat, it will cost in the region of £10/£12 per head for a full meal – please let either Rich or Mike know in advance to book your place so that we can confirm numbers.

Group run – Sunday Jan 11th

We are planning to have a group run on Sunday morning (Jan 11th) in the Beacon Hill/Bradgate Park area.  Meeting 8am at Wilton Road Car Park (to share lifts) or 8.30am at the Sports Ground Car Park, Watermead Lane, Loughborough.

The plan is to run to Beacon Hill, Beacon Plantation, Windmill Hill, Bradegate Park and then a choice of ways back to vary the distance.  There will then be chance to refuel with a late breakfast before heading back.

This should be a really good run – whether as training for the Charnwood Hills, Belvoir Challenge or similar races, or just as an excuse to burn a few calories on an off road run.
