May 2012 - Luke claims bronze at county champs

Junior Presentation Night

The time came for the juniors to enjoy the annual presentation night. Wanting to move away from the usual disco night we decided to enjoy our night with the older members of our club, in the form of a mixed relay. Having had a dry day everything looked good for a dry night however true to form the English weather it decided it was not to be and started to rain ten minutes before the start. There was a very quick discussion and it was decided to carry on regardless.

So the teams were decided (although I need a bit more practise at this as the reams were a bit lob sided). With help from Richard and Julie we managed to get kids and adults around their laps in the right order and with the correct amount of laps.

I would like to thank Neil and Wayne for running the last lap with Sabine so she wasn’t on her own. It must have been hard on them as they had already ran 5 laps so must have been tired, well done to you both.

We then moved inside for the food, presentation and for the senior members the most importantly the beer. The winners of the awards were as follows:

The Achiever award went to Thomas Woods for his continual hard work and commitment to his athletics.

juniors
The Young athlete award went to Ellen Thomas.

juniors
The junior athlete award went to Marcus Rowland.

juniors
The Athlete of the Year award went to Jasmin Southam for her continuing progression and results in the sport.

I would like to thank all the senior striders who took part and helped make the evening a success and all the parents who stood in the rain supporting everyone.

Welcome to the Juniors section

The juniors section has been around for 12 years. We have had very good results over these years with many of our athletes representing Leicestershire in cross country (in all age groups) and sports hall athletics.

juniors

We cater for ages between 8 to 18 years and include all levels of fitness and abilities. We have 6 qualified coaches; Richard Cox and Diane Underwood level 3, Nick Brown and Andy Robinson level 2 Lucy Underwood and John Cresswell who are level 1. We are all CRB checked and all have been on child protection courses.

The group have two training sessions a week. On Mondays we meet at the Sherard School on Grange Drive (6.15pm to 7.15pm). This is an outdoor session; where we train in all weathers (including the school holidays). During the summer, training sessions are held at the country park (6pm to 7pm) again in all weathers (again including the school holidays). When winter arrives we then train indoors at the Vet camp on Asfordby Road (6pm to 7pm).

juniors

Indoor training consists of circuit training for the older athletes and sports hall athletics for the youngsters. As we have to pay for the cost of the hall we charge a fee of £2.00 (any extra money we make is put to good use by purchasing new equipment). Because we are a small club we are unable to enter the track and field league, but we do enter local open meetings and attend cross-country meetings. However with the changes happening within England Athletics and the new opportunities for competition, this may change.

juniors

We do appreciate the cost of extra curricular activities and we want to encourage as many kids into athletics, so we do not charge a membership fee to become a Strider. If you represent the club we will lend you a club vest (which are available to buy from the club). If you need anymore information you can contact me by e-mail roadrunner2uk@yahoo.co.uk or on 07771661611.
Hope to hear or see you soon
Diane Underwood (Coach).
