At the end of the race we all retired to the Rugby Club for a sumptuous buffet, which included (amongst all of the goodies) a fantastic selection of homemade cakes with Granny Dolby’s chocolate brownies taking star rating. Thanks to all of you who brought cakes and sandwiches – I think we’ve set a high standard!
Thanks as well to everyone who helped out, from the humblest Mars bar ‘giver-outer’, the raffle ticket distributor and to the marshals who did a great job around the course - Geoff, Di, Ron, Cis, Ian, Christian, Kirsty and Paul for the Photo's, plus anyone else who knows me. Also the unknown dinner lady who sorted out the food, Wayne for sweeping up (he’s got to be good at something!), the vultures who did a good job of clearing up any food for their pack-up and, finally, to those who helped clean up at the end.
A donation was made by each runner, with £98 being raised for the Air Ambulance. Many thanks. [Neil]

Stilton Striders Xmas Dinner
Another excellent gathering of 50 Striders at the 2008 Christmas Dinner and Presentation evening at The Plough Stathern had a fun packed (well I enjoyed it ) evening. A couple of pints of the local brew in the bar before heading through to the restaurant for the "guess or remember what you ordered for starter" game. This is a great way to start a meal and is guaranteed to annoy even the most experienced waitress. Things started to go awry (good word) when a lady member grabbed a smoked salmon instead of a pate leaving 3 pate's left and Stuart (or Stewart) salmon-less. The waitress demanded to inspect 'ze lizt' but I destroyed all the evidence so I did not get detention.
The main course was good as usual with plenty of meat and veg and only one awkward pseudo vegatarian the room, so went off without a hitch. Home made puddings and mince pies and coffee to follow to get everyone in the mood for the presentations.
The main speeches were given by Theresa and the trophies were presented by our esteemed member Ron Grove (without an S). Main prize winners this year were :
- Mens Winner ---- John Cresswell
- Ladies Winner----Vicki Lowe
- Veterans Award--Nick Brown
- Most Improved---Julie Jaggard (who. question mark)
- Club Person ------Darryl Woolward

Congratulations to all of those and I hope their awards spur them on to greater things in the future. The London Marathon places went to Phil Douglas and Andy Robinson, Good luck to them and to everyone competing in this years event.

After a month by month guide to the Summer outrun season giving at least 12 good reasons why its better to run across the fields and keep out of the rugby club in the Summer and in fact during the rest of the year, the main award of the season was presented. After much deliberation and a fair amount of cash being exchanged between myself and those of you who didn't want to win it, the 'special' award (went, deservedly so after raiding his partners wardrobe over the course of the year which shows true dedication (can anyone show as much this year), to part-time pizza salesman and entrepreneur Wayne Hackett.
I would also like to thank Wayne for making the rest of the evening go so well. Fun and games were played with a pass the parcel game with forfeits, with the parcel for some strange reason ending up with Wayne on three occasions. He reverted to type when putting on lipstick for the kiss the pigs butt game and looked great in his feather boa, and he is still trying to blow up his balloons. I may be able to help him there as Santa bought me a kit for making balloon animals, I have had hours of fun and can now make a dachshund, a poodle and a top heavy Rhinocerous with an enormous horn!!! Main winners of pass the parcel were myself, and two other people, who cares. There was also a major raffle with about 50 prizes which took us into the wee small hours.
The final game was the legendry True or False game with jelly santas and snowmen as prizes, none of your rubbish here, no expense spared. A tip for next year. After asking the same question for 6 years some of you are still confused about Daniel O'Donnell's real name which is in fact Daniel O'Donnell and not Donnel O'Daniel. Or is it. question mark.
Thanks to everyone for your support.
Regards Big Leggy.
Darryl's Cafe
To get everybody in the Christmas spirit Darryl invited the club to his eating establishment 'Off the Beaten Path' where we were treated to home made soup, rolls and a selection of home made cakes and pastries. A big thank you to Darryl his wife Angela and the girls for making it a great evening.
Before starting on the food a group of us ran around the mine road in the dark with only Waynes head torch to guide us - he was mistaken for a dalek more than once. The 'softies' just did a route around the town. After the run we were visted by Helen Langlands, a group fund raiser for the D L R air ambulance, we presented her with a cheque for £150 (money raised throughout the Summer out runs - by holding a GPS sweep competition). Thanks to all who contributed and we hope to beat that this summer. [Neil]
